Flood Saga
I hope I've finally reached the end of my bucket carrying days by finishing some inside repairs to our basement
July 31, 2019

July 23-31
I crowed too soon about the weather, and the heavy rains came back. However, the rain has finally stopped this week, which means I finally had the opportunity to make some repairs to the basement and repaint the floor from the last flooding. I even seized the chance to give the old stairs a brighter coat of paint to spruce it up a bit. I kept the old stencils, but opted for a brighter sand color as the background. I loved the blue, but I was starting to associate the dents with the floods. Perhaps the the lighter color won’t hold up any better, but at least for now it looks clean.
Some more strenuous repairs were required for the leaks, however. Though we have lived decades without too much water trouble, in recent years, every time we would get a gollywasher, our basement would flood, pouring down the chimney and even around the windows. Now even a bit of moisture is sufficient to cause trouble. After previously repairing the windows, affixing a cap to the chimney, and reworking the ground several times, I was finally ready to turn my attentions the problems inside.
Using basement caulking and some cement, I made sure every crack on the walk was completely resealed and dried. Some new paint was necessary for the stains left behind after the last rain, and hopefully with all the new improvements both outside and in this will be the last time a team of buckets get carried outside in a storm. I’m ready to stay inside during the next severe weather we have, and I have my fingers crossed that these repairs are the last I have to make for a long while.
