Nutrition is paramount for good egg production and healthy chickens
June 6, 2014

When I first started raising chickens I thought I would mix my own organic feed. That quickly proved to be a time consuming endeavor. I think it was too difficult to get the proper nutrition for my chickens, as I had some who began eating their own feathers. Then I decided to try a commercial brand, but this made my chickens cannibalistic toward one another. After reading the ingredients I found that the company had used chicken in the feed. Wow, that’s just wrong. So, finally I found a company that mixes a good wholesome feed, Naturewise by Nutrena. It’s organic, without any chicken meat to tempt my chickens into bad behavior. Today, my chickens are happy with their feed, and I find that the chickens’ favorite mix is a combination of both pellets and crumbles.

Snacks are another important factor in chicken nutrition. It’s a nice supplement to their diets, and it’s also nice to tip the hard working girls, especially when they give us such lovely eggs. My happy birds like oats in the evening, birdseed in the morning, vegetable scraps from the kitchen, and their favorite watermelon rinds. I’ve also found that these treats make great training tools too, when you want your free range chickens to come back to the coop when called for.

Today, I now have shiny, healthy, and though I still like spoiling my girls, I’ve found that as far as feed is concerned, the nutritional homework is best left to the professionals.
